On May 18, 2024, the Bluestone River Water Trail Committee plans to hold a public paddling trip and informational meeting about the Bluestone River Water Trail Project. The meeting will be at 2 pm at the Riverfront ATV Resort. The Bluestone River Water Trail will be a paddling route from Coopers, West Virginia, to Bluestone Lake State Park. The trail will consist of public access points, informational kiosks, and information about how to paddle the river safely.
The Paddle will start at 10 AM. Paddlers must bring their own equipment and arrive at the Coopers Launch. The easiest way to find Coopers is to copy and paste the following GPS coordinates into any common navigation app: 37°19’21.8”N 81°19’34.0”W
The Paddle will be about 5.5 miles and will take about four hours. The river is primarily calm and easy to paddle in this section, but there is one small drop (about 6 inches) and a couple swift/shallow sections. The ideal river stage for paddling this section is about 3.5 feet as read on the Pipestem Gauge, accessible here: https://water.weather.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?gage=pipw2&wfo=rnk
All paddlers are strongly encouraged to wear personal flotation devices!
The Paddle will conclude at Riverfront ATV Resort: 3331 Simmons River Rd, Bluefield, WV 24701 at approximately 2 pm. The informational meeting will be held at the conclusion of the Paddle. Anyone is welcome to attend the informational meeting, regardless of whether they participate in the paddle or not.
