Infectious Medical Waste Permit
For Walgreens at
2933 Robert C. Byrd Dr.,
Beckley, WV 25801

Infectious Medical Waste (IMW) Permit: On July 25, 2022, Walgreens applied for an IMW permit with the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources Office of Environmental Services medical waste division. The application was approved. A requirement of the approval is that Public Notice be posted alerting community members about the approval and offering them opportunity to voice concerns and make comments to the Company.

The health and safety of Walgreens team members, customers and communities is our top priority. Point-of-care facilities, like pharmacies, generate IMW, like needles used for immunizations. IMW may carry and possibly transmit infectious diseases. To address this possible transmission, Walgreens maintains, regularly updates, and adheres to a comprehensive Medical Waste Management Plan for IMW, in accordance with applicable state law.

o On average, a Walgreens pharmacy generates less than 25 lbs. of medical waste each month.
o This facility utilizes a medical waste disposal system managed by the Stericycle Disposal by Mail System manufactured by Stericycle, Inc., which is located at 28161 N. Keith Dr. in Lake Forest, IL 60045.
o Stericycle has a Disposal by Mail System that transports via the United States Postal Service (USPS).
o Used needles are generated in pharmacies during the administration of immunizations. Once used, needles are categorized as ‘contaminated’. Contaminated sharps are discarded immediately or as soon as feasible into sharps containers that are then discarded in Stericycle Disposal by Mail System containers.
o Sharps and other medical waste will be placed into Stericycle Disposal by Mail System containers at the point of origin. Filled containers will be sealed at the point of origin.
o All containers and outer boxes that are sealed will not be reopened. Ruptured or leaking packages of medical waste will be placed into a larger container without disturbing original seals.
o These containers are made of high-density polyethylene and are OSHA-compliant prior to mailing.

Walgreens is commited to the protection of humna health and the evviorment. T o that end, Walgreens has worked diligently to ensure that our medical waste compliance program complies with applicable laws and continually seeks ways to build on these efforts.
