The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) announces a comment period on draft Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) for selected streams in the Tygart Valley Watershed. The comment period begins October 2, 2015 and extends through November 2, 2015.

A Total Maximum Daily Load is a plan of action used to clean up streams not meeting water quality standards. Each of the streams under TMDL development has been identified as violating state water quality standards and the federal Clean Water Act requires TMDL development for them. The impairments addressed in this project include dissolved aluminum, dissolved oxygen, fecal coliform, pH, total beryllium and total iron. The project includes the mainstem Tygart River, with the exception of Tygart Lake, and 250 named tributaries. After consideration of public comments, DEP will make appropriate revisions and submit final draft TMDLs to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for approval.

Two public meetings are scheduled for the Tygart Valley draft TMDLS.
The Oct. 13 meeting will be at the Elkins Holiday Inn and Suites, 50 Martin Street, Elkins,WV26241.
The Oct. 14 meeting will be at Tygart Lake State Park, 1240 Paul E. Malone Rd
Grafton, WV 26354.
Both meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m.
The DEP invites public comment on all aspects of the draft TMDLs. Written comments may be submitted by U.S. Mail, electronic mail, and fax. The preferred form for comment submissions is e-mail or disk in order to expedite the review and response process. Written comments should be postmarked no later than November 2, 2015.
