The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) will host an open house meeting on Wednesday January 14, 2026, at the Zaleski ODNR Complex, 29371 Wheelabout Rd, McArthur, OH. 45651 from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM. Please call 614-935-0785 for additional information regarding the open house. The purpose of the open house meeting is to discuss abandoned mine land projects that are proposed for construction in 2026. Staff from the ODNR Division of Mineral Resources Management will also be available to discuss environmental and public health and safety issues associated with Ohio’s abandoned mines. Staff will present a list of proposed projects for Athens, Gallia, Jackson, Lawrence, Perry and Vinton counties. Funds are available for mines abandoned before Aug. 3, 1977, when legislation to address the issue of abandoned mine lands went into effect. The following projects will be implemented utilizing federal grant funds allocated to Ohio as part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. ODNR was awarded a $46.4 million grant in 2024 to fund abandoned mine reclamation throughout the state’s coal mining region.
