The Pocahontas County Commission has requested that the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) facilitate an environmental cleanup at the Former Howes Office Building under the Brownfields Assistance Program. The site is located at 118 Industrial Park Road, Durbin, WV 26264.
The building is undergoing remediation for redevelopment purposes. Asbestos containing building materials were identified by asbestos surveys conducted at the property on April 26 , 2024.
The WVDEP Office of Environmental Remediation Brownfields Assistance Program, through the CERCLA Section 128(a) USEPA State Response Program, will fund the necessary abatement of the asbestos containing materials. This abatement will be performed in keeping with all applicable state and federal laws, rules, and regulations.

The property is intended to be redeveloped for commercial/industrial purposes.
