Southern West Virginia Housing (SWVH) recently identified a data security incident involving certain paper records that may have affected some individuals and family program participants served by SWVH during 2022 and 2023.
The incident involved unauthorized access to certain physical files containing personal information associated with Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program participants from those program years. Upon discovery of the incident, SWVH notified law enforcement, took prompt action to secure the affected records, initiated an internal review of the incident and of the affected records, notified HUD, and implemented additional safeguards to prevent unauthorized access to the paper records.
At this time, there is no evidence that the information has been misused in a manner that would negatively impact any SWVH participants. However, SWVH is providing notice to potentially affected individuals and offering complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection services as a cautionary measure.
Based on information currently available to SWVH, Public Housing participants are not believed to have been affected by this incident.
Individuals who participated in the HCV program during 2022 or 2023 and have questions, or who would like to determine whether their information may have been involved, may contact:
