CITY OF ST. ALBANS FIRE CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION NOTICE OF COMPETITIVE EXAMINATION FOR PROBATIONARY FIREFIGHTER FOR THE ST. ALBANS FIRE DEPARTMENT Notice is hereby given, pursuant to West Virginia Code, 8-15-11, et seq. and Fire Civil Service Rule V, a list of eligibles for appointment of Probationary Firefighters must be established by competitive examination and maintained by the St. Albans Fire Civil Service Commission. All persons desiring to seek employment with the St. Albans Fire Department, City of St. Albans, Kanawha County, West Virginia, will please TAKE NOTICE as follows: 1. Obtain from and file with the City Clerk, 1499 MacCorkle Avenue, St. Albans, West Virginia, a completed, verified application for appointment. The application must be given under affirmation and must be filed with the City Clerk before 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 10, 2025. 2. Applicants may not be under the age of l8 years, nor over the age of 35 years on the date of his or her application. Satisfactory proof of age shall be required of each applicant upon submission of his or her application. Per WV State Code 8-15-17 (e): If any applicant is an honorably discharged veteran of any branch of the United States armed forces, armed services reserve, or National Guard, then the individual may apply for an original appointment if the applicant is not more than 40 years of age. 3. All applicants must: (a) possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent, (b) have no felony convictions, (c) have no convictions within five (5) years of a misdemeanor offense involving larceny, false swearing, gambling, or other crime indicating questionable moral character, and (d) must have no habitual use of alcohol or drugs. 4. Achieve passing score on a competitive written examination to be given on Saturday, June 28, 2025 at 9:00 a.m. at the Hansford Center, 500 Washington Street, in the City of St. Albans, West Virginia. The Commission will, at its discretion, set the level of achievement necessary to qualify for appointment. A valid driver’s license must be shown to commissioners prior to the written exam. 5. All applicants successfully completing the written examination for the position of Probationary Firefighter shall be required to submit to the following additional examinations: a. Pass the physical capacity examination that complies with the requirements of the St. Albans Fire Civil Service Commission. b. Pass one or more medical examinations on the requirements of NFPA 1582 of the Standard on Medical Requirements for Firefighters. Inquiry about the Standard may be made to the Fire Chief. c. A background investigation to verify all pertinent information concerning the applicant; and d. Psychological testing to determine the applicant’s suitability for employment. No application will be considered for placement on the list of eligibles from which the appointments referred to above are to be made by the Mayor unless it is received by the City Clerk, 1499 MacCorkle Avenue, St. Albans, West Virginia, before 4:30 p.m., June 10, 2025, the applicant meets the minimum requirements of the West Virginia Code and Regulations of the Fire Civil Service Commission, and the applicant submits to and successfully completes each phase.
