Environmental Permit
PURPOSE OF NOTICE: To seek public comment and announce a public hearing on a draft permit from the Department of Environmental Quality regarding a landfill in Tazewell County, Virginia.
PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD: August 5, 2023 to September 27, 2023
PUBLIC HEARING: Tazewell County Administration Building at 197 Main Street, Tazewell, VA 24651 on September 12, 2023 at 7:00 p.m.
PERMIT NAME AND NUMBER: Tazewell County Sanitary Landfill, SWP564
PERMIT APPLICANT: Tazewell County Board of Supervisors
FACILITY NAME AND LOCATION: Tazewell County Sanitary Landfill; Springville, between the Towns of Tazewell and Bluefield, approximately one-half mile north of Routes 19 and 460, on County Route 649 in Tazewell County, Virginia.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Tazell County Board of Supervisors has applied for a modification to a permit that allows the the Tazewell County Sanitary Landfill to operate an existing landfill in Tazewell, Virginia. This modification to the permit would allow expansion of the facility to include Phase V and to modify the alternate final caps to include additional alternatives. Permit modules are updated to meet current requirements and incorporate all previous modifications.
HOW TO COMMENT: DEQ accepts comments by hand-delivery, e-mail, fax or postal mail. All comments must include the name, address and telephone number of the person commenting and be received by DEQ within the comment period. DEQ also accepts written and oral comments at public hearings. The public may review the draft permit and application online at https://www.deq.virginia.gov/permits/public-notices/land-protection or at the DEQ office named below. Copies of the permit documents are also available at the Tazewell County Court House at 315 Court Street, 3rd Floor Suite 318 in Tazewell, VA.
