PUBLIC NOTICE NO.: 20231109
DATE OF PUBLICATION:

In response to a release of petroleum products from regulated tanks, the property owner/operator under the direction of the Tanks Corrective Action Unit of the Department of Environmental Protection developed a draft corrective action plan (CAP) for the following site:

Par Mar Store #92
1042 Midland Trail
Smithers, West Virginia
Facility ID 1006945,
Leak ID 2022-013

On October 7, 2021, petroleum odors were identified by facility personnel within the convenience store building at Par Mar Store #92. The source of the petroleum odors reported on October 7, 2021, was determined to be a sanitary sewer line south of the convenience store building. The suspected source of the release was petroleum infiltration from the underground storage tank (UST) system at Par Mar Store #92. Upon identification of petroleum odors, tank tightness testing was conducted on the UST system at Par Mar Store #92 in an effort to determine the specific release point. Results of October 7 and 12, 2021, tank tightness testing indicated the three (3) tanks that comprise the UST system at Par Mar Facility #92 passed. Upon further investigation, subsurface soil impacts were identified at Par Mar Facility #92 as a result of the October 2021 release event. Therefore, a CAP was prepared proposing injection of PersulfOx® Catalyzed Persulfate In-Situ Chemical Oxidation (ISCO) reagent to address subsurface soil impacted by petroleum hydrocarbons. The CAP briefly describes the extent of the release and details the proposed cleanup methods at the site. Copies of the CAP are available for public review at the following location:
