COMBINED SEWER OVERFLOWS
The City of Fairmont is a Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) community. The Sanitary Sewer Board of the City of Fairmont is regulated under National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit Number WV0023353.
CSOs are designed to discharge when the sanitary sewers cannot carry the combined flow of sanitary sewage and storm runoff. The sanitary sewer system of the City of Fairmont has 33 CSOs that discharge into streams and rivers. The public is urged to avoid primary contact with streams and rivers that accept CSO discharges during and after storm events.
