REMEDIATION ACTIVITY

The McDowell County Commission has requested that the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) facilitate an environmental cleanup at the McDowell County Commission, Probation Office, and Magistrate Court Buildings under the State Response Program. The sites are located at 109, 105, and 119 Wyoming St., Welch, West Virginia.
The three buildings in question were most recently utilized as office space for the McDowell County government. Asbestos containing building materials were identified by asbestos surveys conducted in the Spring of 2023.
The Office of Environmental Remediation (OER) at the WVDEP, through the CERCLA Section 128(a) USEPA State Response Program, will fund the necessary abatement of these asbestos containing materials prior to the demolition of the three County Office buildings described above. This abatement will be performed in keeping with all applicable state and federal laws, rules, and regulations.

Prior to the demolition of these buildings, all identified asbestos containing materials will be removed from the building and disposed of, in keeping with all applicable federal and state laws, rules, and regulations.

These properties are intended to be reused as a consolidated office space for the county government.
