LEGAL NOTICE
The City of Elkins, in accordance with its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit, maintains and operates a sanitary sewer collection and treatment facility serving the residents within and near Elkins, West Virginia.
A portion of the wastewater system operates as a combined system with combined sewer overflows (CSO’s), which means during rain events, storm water runoff is carried into the sanitary sewer lines. During heavy rain events, the system could become overloaded with combined storm water runoff and sanitary sewer wastewater, and discharge into the receiving streams.
During dry weather the system can handle flows to the wastewater treatment plant and overflows do not normally pose a concern. However, be advised that during storm events or snow melt, these overflows may discharge and pose a potential health risk from contact with the river at the CSO points.
You are advised to avoid contact with the water during these overflow events. Should you observe a discharge event or have any questions regarding this advisory, please contact City of Elkins during normal business hours at (304) 635-7021. After 4:30 p.m. on business days or on weekends contact the non-emergency number of the E-911 Center at (304) 636-9526.
