For Modification of a Dam
Notice is hereby given that James W. “Jay” Wallace has applied for approval to modify the Wallace Dam, located on an unnamed tributary of Tygart Valley River, approximately 3.6 miles upstream of Beverly, Randolph County, West Virginia.
The dam is an earthen structure reportedly built in the 1980s that is used for recreational purposes. The dam consists of two embankments, approximately 40 feet in height. The normal reservoir pool storage volume is estimated at 150 acre-feet, while the maximum storage volume is projected at 198 acre-feet. Modifications to be performed include: (1) construction of an auxiliary spillway and outlet channel to safely pass the Probable Maximum Precipitation, 6-hour storm event and (2) installation of a subsurface drain collection system for conveyance and monitoring of seepage located along the downstream groins. Upon completion of the modifications to bring the dam into compliance with the Dam Control Act & Safety Rule, the capacity of the dam to store or discharge rainfall will be 27.5 inches in six hours. The hazard potential classification applied for is “1” meaning that loss of human life is likely if the dam were to fail.
The land surface covered by this application is owned by James W. “Jay” Wallace, and legal right to conduct operations is by deed. The dam is owned by James W. “Jay” Wallace.
Location of the dam is shown on the map included with this advertisement. Additional information may be available under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) through written request to the DEP address below.
Any person who may be adversely affected by issuance of a Certificate of Approval may request a hearing, provided that such request be in writing, contain specific objections to the issuance of the Certificate of Approval and be received by the Dam Safety Section within fifteen (15) days of this publication.
