NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
TAZEWELL COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND AND REENACT SECTION 18-65 OF THE TAZEWELL COUNTY CODE OF ORDINANCES TO
INCREASE QUALIFICATIONS FOR TAX EXEMPTIONS FOR ELDERLY PERSONS
PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that the Board of Supervisors of Tazewell County, Virginia (“the Board”), will conduct a public hearing on April 9, 2024 at 6:40 PM, or as soon thereafter as may be practical, at the Tazewell County Administration Building, located at 197 Main Street, Tazewell, Virginia 24651, and hereby gives its intent to consider An Ordinance to Amend and Reenact Section 18-65 of the Tazewell County Code of Ordinances to Increase Qualifications for Tax Exemptions for Elderly Persons.
Section 18-65 of the Tazewell County Code of Ordinances allows a head of household aged sixty-five (65) and over to claim a taxation exemption of up to Three Hundred Dollars ($300.00) per year on real estate and mobile homes owned by the head of household. To earn the exemption: (1) the total combined income of all members in the household must not exceed Thirty Thousand Dollars ($30,000.00); and (2) the combined net worth of all members in the household must not exceed Seventy-Five Thousand Dollars ($75,000.00). With the increases in the costs of living and the price of goods and services, for the benefit of Tazewell County residents, the Board desires to raise those thresholds to (1) Forty Thousand Dollars ($40,000.00) and (2) One Hundred Thousand Dollars ($100,000.00) respectively.
All persons wishing to comment on the Ordinance are hereby invited to attend and state their views thereon. A notification of five (5) working days before the meeting will enable the Tazewell County Administrator’s Office to make reasonable arrangements to ensure accessibility to the meeting.
